Tech Tip - Make Travel Easier with TripCase

Whether you travel a lot or just occasionally, keeping track of your travel information can be a challenge. So often reservations for airlines, hotels, cars, and other things are made separately. You end up with multiple emails in your inbox, and when it comes time for the trip, you cannot find the piece of information you need.

I have been a user of one travel app or another since I got my iPhone. TripCase is one that I continue to use for its simplicity and general functions. It is an excellent way to keep track of my current, upcoming, and even past travel plans all in one place. As an added bonus, it also makes it easy to share your travel information with others. When I add a new trip, TripCase automatically sends a notification to each of the people I have set up to “always share” my travel plans with. I can also see my family’s upcoming travel in addition to my own. That can come in very handy if you happen to have multiple people traveling at the same time.

Key Features

TripCase makes it easy to get your travel information into the application. Depending on how you typically make your travel arrangements, you may be able to have your travel service send the email information directly to TripCase without any additional intervention. When I have set up travel through my current and previous employers, I added the TripCase email to recipients, and that ensures that all of the travel information goes directly into the application.

If you book your travel separately, you can also forward all of your itineraries to TripCase and have it connect automatically to your account. Then your travel information will magically appear in TripCase. This is easy to set up and works well.

TripCase will also allow you to enter trip information manually without sending an email. You can select enter manually and then key in the specific details of your trip. If you need to add quick flight information and have it available, this can be a faster solution than setting up the email and sending it to TripCase.

TripCase lets you see all of your upcoming or currently in progress trips, as well as all of your past travel. This can be handy for tracking expenses or matching up calendar events.

For current trips, you can select different views for your travel information. You can see the carousel view, which is set up as ‘cards’ for each portion of your trip. This gives you details such as flight number, confirmation number, gate information, etc.. You can also select the ‘timeline’ view to get a quick overview of all of your trip details in once glance.

From the timeline view, you can select the individual trip portion to get the additional data you need. In both views, your travel events remain in the order in which they will occur based on time. Typically that means your flight information will appear first, then your rental car information, and finally the hotel. If you have other details, such as car service or train transfers, those appear in order as well.

The details of your previous trips are all maintained within TripCase also. You can select the ‘Past’ tab from the top and get a list of the previous trips you have taken and kept within TripCase.

One additional handy benefit of TripCase is the ability to track and view other people’s travel information. They can select to send you their itineraries, and they will populate into TripCase just as your own travel would. This can be very helpful when traveling with other business colleagues, or if your family does a lot of traveling. I use this when I am trying to coordinate calendars or other arrangements around my family’s travel plans.

Get notifications

One of the biggest benefits of TripCase is the notifications that it provides to you. I have found that TripCase is as quick or even quicker than the airlines themselves in providing flight delay or change information. You can see all of the change details right in the app. If your flight is delayed or a gate has changed, you can see the updated information, in red, within the app.

TripCase will also provide reminders and updates before your trip begins. It can be set up to notify you twenty-four hours ahead of your flight to remind you to check-in for your trip. This can be especially helpful if you are flying Southwest, and you need to check in as close to that twenty-four-hour mark as possible to avoid the dreaded group ‘C’ designation.

The application can also be set up to give you a status update and reminder several hours ahead of your flight to remind you to head to the airport or to let you know that your flight is on time. Again, this can be very useful to know if your flight has been delayed prior to leaving for the airport or if you are immersed in something and need a reminder to stop and depart for your trip.

TripCase is not the most powerful or feature-rich travel application available, but it is easy and covers almost everything you need to help manage your travel agendas. It is a free app with an option for a service to help manage your expenses for expense reports. I have not used that service and believe that there are likely better alternatives than what TripCase is offering. Check out TripCase if you are looking for a simple, lightweight travel management tool that can help in all aspects of your on-the-go needs.

Safe travels.
